00. Two maps
with three-dimensional effect. One shows surface colors and the
other shows hight difference. They help hikers to orient themselves on
the hiking trails around Landmannalaugar. Some main walking routes
are described, how difficult they are, which dangers can be faced
and what is to be seen. The line markings show differences in
how steep the trails are, whether they are vague, clear or marked.
The map is made in a free, artistic way and is not suitable for
measuring distances.
01. Laugahraun - Brennisteinsalda - Grænagil 4.3 km.
1.5 - 2 tímar/hours/Stunden/heures Difficulties : *
Uneven parts, which recently have been made easier to pass. Danger
: False steps in rugged lava: Landscape : Rough lava with obsidian
and moss. Variable mountains surround the area. Brennisteinsalda is
the most spectacular one, with a steaming area at its foot. Multiple
colors are all over, including Grænagil (Green Gorge). Variations : A walk upon Brennisteinsalda. It may be descended along Vondugil but that makes the trip a one third longer.
02.
Bláhnúkur 5.7 km. 2.5 - 3.5 tímar/hours/Stunden/heures Difficulties
: ** A steep but relatively short walk. Danger : None with cautious
behavior. Only the lowest south part of the trail is ver steep. Landscape
: This is one of the most popular views in Iceland´s interior.
It is easy to reach, the view is great and there is a view disk at the
top. Variations : Go the same
way back after reaching the summit. It is a shorter way and avoids the steepest slope.
03.
Suðurnámur - Vondugil 8.5 km. 3 - 4.5 tímar/hours/Stunden/heures
Difficulties : ** Relatively easy for such a big mountain.
Danger : None, if the path is followed. Otherwise there is risk of falling down the slopes. Landscape : Good view over the Landmannalaugar area and
more. The mountain itself is rich in shapes and colors. Variations : A short walk from
the Námshraun-lava into
a gorge in Suðurnámur. Variable possibillities
in walking in Vondugil.
04.
Ljótipollur 13.3 km. 4 - 6 tímar/hours/Stunden/heures
Difficulties : * Easy if Norðurnámur
is not a part of the program.
Danger : The steepest slopes of Norðurnámur and the ridge of Ljótipollur. Landscape : The explosive crater Ljótipollur, lakes and rivers (Ljótipollur, Frostastaðavatn and Jökulgilskvísl) and three different lavas (Námshraun,
Norðurnámshraun and Frostastaðahraun); mountains ascending
to plateaus.
Variations : There are a variety of easy trails, some of them reachable by car.
It´s easy to walk around the crater on it´s
rim or walk down to the lake at
it´s bottom. A part of the
Ljótipollur-tour can be taken on Frostastaðavatn´s shore.
Escending Norðurnámur
provides great view.
05.
Vondugil - Dómadalur - Frostastaðavatn 17.8
km.
6 - 8 tímar/hours/Stunden/heures
Difficulties : ** Easy but long walk. Danger : There
will be few dangers, after the trail
has been marked. At one place it´s easy to break a leg in a
very rugged
waterbed. Landscape : Variable
kinds of bare and vegetatet areas. This
view is a different world of rhyolite-mountains versus
tuff-mountains. There
is the natural sculpture garden of lava Dómadalshraun. Variations
: The circle
can be shortened
by avoiding Stórhöfði
and Dómadalur. The sand and the
lava between
Stórhöfði
and Tjaldfell are easy to walk on. A hike to the summit
of Háalda is a steep sideway,
but the wiev is worth the big effort. It´s
recommendet
to take the same path down again, since the way to Laugavegur, near
Stórihver is indistinct
and it´s easy to get lost there.
06.
Vörðuhnúkur - Skalli - Laugavegur 15
km. 6.5 - 8.5 tímar/hours/Stunden/heures
Difficulties : *** Long trail, partly steep and can be
very muddy. Danger : There is often fog and bad weather at
the highest part. Landscape : This is the best trail to
enjoy the rhyolite feast of the Torfajökull
area and to have a view over the Jökulgil canyon and its side
gorges. Variations : The canyon is
accessible from this trail. The circle can be shortened by going down
towards
Bláhnúkur, but that way is more dangerous and difficult
than the
marked hiking trail.
